Stop Fox Hunting | Gifts for Animal Lovers

Foxes are still being hunted for 'fun'

If you follow us on Social Media, you will have seen the beautiful photos I managed to capture of a fox roaming around the lively village of Woolacombe, Devon in broad daylight on Easter Bank Holiday weekend.

Some other tourists and I attempted to lure the fox back to a nearby wooded area but, the fox wasn’t interested. According to the locals, he is often sighted in the village, looking for scraps and certainly knows his way around.

Although foxes are usually associated with the countryside, village and town life may be safer for them as their usual habitat could still be putting them in danger.

Why? – Despite the ban, foxes are still being hunted for 'fun'.

Fox hunting with dogs has been banned since 2004 because it is a barbaric and unnecessary sport.

Sadly, this ban is not properly enforced. Many of those who once chose to participate in fox hunting with dogs now take part in 'Trail Hunting' and, it is believed they are using this to bend the current law.

What is Trail Hunting?

Trail hunting was born in 2004 after the Hunting Act came into force. It was created to be an alternative to traditional hunting because it involves hounds following the scent of a fox instead of the fox itself.

However, the fox scent is usually set in areas where both they and other mammals are likely to live. As the hounds are still being trained to follow the smell of an animal, this often leads them to chase and kill foxes, hares and deer.

The trail is supposedly placed in secret without those on horseback knowing. If the hounds decide to chase an animal the hunter will claim they knew nothing about it and use this as the reason they did not stop the hound from killing the poor creature.

There is evidence to suggest that trail hunting has been created as a cover up for those still wishing to hunt without being prosecuted (visit https://www.league.org.uk/trail-hunting for more information).

They must be stopped.

What can you do to help?

The League Against Cruel Sports will be presenting their petition, ‘Stop the killing of animals by hunts in the UK’, to the British government this December.

Hundreds of thousands of signatures are needed so, follow the link to sign it yourself and then share it with your friends and family.

The Punderful World of Cats | Gifts for Animal Lovers

Introducing our new brand - Katie Ruby and her Punderful World of Cats!

I am thrilled to bring you our new collection of cat themed gifts straight from the mind of Katie Ruby Miller – The Punderful World of Cats.

If you have been following us on Social Media, you will know that I am a little bit cat obsessed (probably a bit of an understatement) and enjoy a good pun. So, you can imagine my delight when my sister bought me a Hairy Potter print for my birthday. Harry Potter in cat form? What is not to love about that?!

I immediately set about seeing if we could stock some of Katie Ruby's puntastic products so you can make another fellow cat person squawk with delight when they open their gift from you. - They are all available now!

I think it's great to find out what inspires a person to create their designs, so I had an interview with Katie Ruby to find out more.

- What inspired you to start drawing cat puns?

'The Punderful World of Cats became a little bit of an evening escapism from my 9 - 5 as a greetings card designer. During the day, I would have to draw A LOT of butterflies and flowers and things that weren't of great interest to me. I was drawing to be paid and sometimes that takes the joy out of the process. So, I wanted to draw something of interest to me to keep my passion alive. The cat puns are totally my sense of humour and I just wanted to share that with whoever would look at my Facebook or Instagram.'

You can check out Katie Ruby’s latest cat puns by following her on Instagram - katierubyillustration

- Have you always loved drawing?

'Drawing is something I have always enjoyed and my parents have always encouraged me to do. When I was younger, I used to sit and draw characters from TV shows such as the Simpsons and Garfield. Drawing is such a great way to relax and lose yourself to.'

I can imagine it is very relaxing and I like the odd doodle or two myself.  I draw terrible cat faces in everyone’s birthday cards. – I think I probably appreciate them more than they do though.

- What is your first memory of drawing?

'My first memory of drawing is when I was very young and before I started school. I would go to see my Grandad who enjoyed painting and we would sit and draw turtles together ( I was obsessed by teenage mutant ninja turtles). My Grandma has told me in my later life that they had lots of detail to them and she could tell back then that I would be good at art.'

- We know you love cats, but why?

'Before I was born my parents had a cat called Oscar, so I have always lived with cats and I grew up with four different cats over the years, 3 boys and 1 girl with completely different personalities. You have to earn cats love and trust and I think that’s what makes the human-feline relationship so special. I suppose in many ways I feel an infinity with cats as I am quite independent and I am only affectionate when I want to be. Maybe I was a cat in a previous life!

Agreed! – You have to love how arrogant cats are as well!  They know you love them and like to take advantage of that, mainly for food.

- How long does it take for you to create a Punderful cat?

Each pun takes me around 3-4 hours to draw on paper and then render digitally. Though I normally come up with ideas for the puns at the most random of times, so I have quite a list going in my sketchbook. Then I just select one when I've got the time to work on one and go from there.

- If you could be a cat for a day what would you do & why?

'If I could be a cat for the day I would probably spend my day climbing trees. I am always impressed with the agility of cats and the viewpoints from the trees would be pretty impressive. I'd probably also find some super comfy places to sleep, as I do enjoy some shut-eye.'

I know I would go out of my way to confuse humans by meowing for no reason at all.

- Which character from your Punderful World of Cats do you love the most & why?

'It is really tough to pick out one individual cat pun as my favourite. Though if I did have to choose it would be Furank Sinatra as I really feel like I captured his suave personality with the pose. Though as I add to the Punderful World of Cats weekly, this could easily change.'

Yep, I have also found it pretty difficult to pick a favourite cat from the punderful collection. Freddie Purrcury is a winner for me because you can imagine the reincarnated cat version of Freddie Mercury looking like this on stage wowing the audience once again.

Kitten Update - One Month Old!

Kitten Update - One Month Old!

Our kittens have a foot fetish...

Yes, you did read that right, our kittens love feet. They like to bite, scratch and play with toes. If you sit down barefooted, they will be straight there nibbling.

Anyway, last Saturday they turned 4 weeks old and we have finally decided on their names! - Pebbles for the pretty tortoiseshell girl and Carlos for the beautiful black boy. What do you think?

If you are thinking why these names? Well, Carlos means 'Manly' in Spanish and who doesn't love irony? (you can tell he will grow up to be the wimpiest cat ever). As for the name Pebbles, the little tortoiseshell kitten is coloured the same as small smooth stones that you find on the beach...

.... ok, the real reason I chose these names is because they just came to my head and seemed to fit their little faces quite well!

(Although my family are still debating whether or not these should be their names- on the upside, this is better and safer, than debates about religion and politics…)

What else can the kittens do?

Errr not a lot... They are learning how to play, eat, hide in the weirdest of places and burrow into the sofa under the cushions. - I struggle with all of these things so they are doing pretty well.

Oh and they have become models! Yep, I take photos of them and force them to be in selfies with me, this makes them models. If you have liked us on facebook or follow us on Instagram you will already know what I am talking about. They love it I swear...

I wish I had more to report but as I don't I'm going to leave you with this video of Pebbles playing with the scratching post (just ignore the sounds of terrible TV in the background)...Enjoy!  x

Two weeks old! - Kitten Update

Two weeks old! - Kitten Update

They opened their eyes!

The past two weeks have dragged by as we have not so patiently waited for the kittens to open their eyes.

If you are wondering what I am talking about, check out my International Cat Day blog post.

In short, one of my cats miraculously had kittens and now I am going to keep you updated on their progress as they go from balls of fluff to comical kitty cats.

So, two weeks in –

The kittens are still super tiny , feeble and are really trying their best to walk. Finally, they opened their eyes and like most kittens they are brilliantly blue. At this point, their heads are out of proportion with the rest of their body which I find a little bit amusing.

The most interesting thing they have done so far is claw at the side of their box which I of course filmed.

Fidget has really taken on the challenge of having twins. Every time we approach the kittens she will use her arm as a shield of protection. Yes, cats now have arms.

Fidget also thinks that Simba (our ridiculously stupid cat) is brighter than he truly is, she growls at him to protect her babies and he is just like 'errrr WHAT?!' looking very puzzled.

We haven’t come up with any decent names for the kittens yet. My family have suggested ‘Bubble’ and ‘Squeak’ because they make a lot of noise, but I refuse to let the kittens have the same name as leftover cabbage and potato.

If you have any ideas for names, please let me know!

Two Weeks Old! - Kitten Update

- I promise two kittens exist! The other one just knows how to hide from my camera.

3 reasons why animal cushions are an ideal gift

3 reasons why animal cushions are an ideal gift

Stuck for present ideas?

Male or Female, Child or Adult, who doesn't love a good cushion?

Here are 3 reasons why I think animal cushions are an ideal gift:

1) My number one reason for loving animal cushions is the fact they come in a multitude of different shapes and sizes. From sea creatures to safari animals, if you decide you are buying someone a cushion, there is a slim chance they will already own the one you pick for them.

2) Cushions will never fight back! You can hug them for as long as you like and they won't continuously squirm until you let them free. If this gift is for a pet owner, they will know what I mean.

3) Cushions are easy to store, they can be shoved into a cupboard and stay intact. This makes them ideal for people who like to alternate their home accessories.

Not convinced?  Just take a look at some of my favourite animal cushions that we have available here at Gifts for Animal Lovers.

Blue Whale Cushion - £19.99

If they love sea animals, scuba diving or the occasional trip to the beach then why not pick the Blue Whale Cushion? - BUY HIM HERE

Happy International Cat Day!

Happy International Cat Day!

It's International Cat Day so here is a post for the cat lovers out there...

I'm a ‘Crazy Cat Lady’ Why? I am a real cat enthusiast and I am not ashamed to admit it. I fill my friend's facebook feeds with pictures, videos and memes of cats and kittens. You should see the number of cat-related things I have pinned on Pinterest. Maybe I am a little obsessed, but who cares? Cats are awesome. - Just look at their tiny paws, noses, tails and the crazy things they do... How could they not melt your heart?

I am renowned for obtaining lost cats and keeping them when their previous home cannot be found.

In October 2014 I had a phone call, a family member had come across a black cat. She was tiny, thin and could barely lift her head. We immediately took her to the vets to see if she had been microchipped so we could return her to her family.

She wasn’t microchipped and they estimated she was around a year old. They took our details and we decided to foster her until her family was found. No one came forward so she became part of our family.

We booked her into the vets to be spayed and vaccinated, dropped her off a few days later and thought nothing of it. However, whilst Fidget was there I received a call from a rather disgruntled vet who told me Fidget had a scar on her stomach that was likely to have been caused by the procedure already taking place.

So yeah, we collected her and took her home.

3 months later...

The crazy meows, sticking her bum in the air and the constant need for attention. She was on heat.

WHAT?!

We gave the vets a call and they said sometimes it can still appear as though a female cat is on heat even when they have been spayed. So we sighed with relief.

But then his happened on August 6th 2016:

International Cat Day | One for the Cat Lovers

We had a feeling she might be pregnant because she started to get incredibly fat. However, we were never 100% certain because it took her over a year and a half to get pregnant and we were advised that she couldn't get pregnant in the first place.

I would say ‘jokes on them’ but I think the ‘joke’ is on us. Although, I am of course really excited as what cat lover doesn’t love KITTENS?!

We haven't yet chosen their names as we want to see what their personalities are like first. I will keep your updated as they start to develop.

In the meantime, check out this video I took of them. It is very short but you can already tell that they are going to be some needy little cats!
